Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Mumbai

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the most revered spiritual journeys in the world. For pilgrims from Mumbai, this sacred pilgrimage offers a profound connection with Lord Shiva, who is believed to reside at Mount Kailash, and with the divine waters of Lake Mansarovar. Both places are considered the ultimate destination for those seeking spiritual peace, divine blessings, and liberation (Moksha). The Yatra attracts millions of devotees from various parts of the world, and for Mumbaikars, it is a journey of a lifetime.
Spiritual Significance
Mount Kailash, located in Tibet, is believed to be the seat of Lord Shiva, the Supreme Deity in Hinduism. The mountain stands at a towering 22,028 feet and is considered the center of the universe. Pilgrims who complete the sacred Kailash Parikrama (the circumambulation of the mountain) are believed to receive immense spiritual benefits, including Moksha or liberation from the cycle of life and death.

Routes for Pilgrims from Mumbai
Pilgrims from Mumbai can embark on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra either through the Indian Government’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) or through authorized private travel operators. The two main routes to Kailash Mansarovar are:

Via Nepal (Lhasa Route): This is the most popular route for pilgrims traveling from Mumbai. The journey begins with a flight to Kathmandu, Nepal, where pilgrims undergo initial acclimatization. From Kathmandu, the journey continues by road, crossing the Nepal-China border into Tibet. The route includes a visit to Lhasa, Tibet’s spiritual capital, before proceeding to Lake Mansarovar and then to Mount Kailash. This route typically takes 24-30 days, including acclimatization at various stops.

Via Sikkim (Nathu La Pass Route): A less commonly chosen alternative is traveling from Gangtok in Sikkim, crossing the Nathu La Pass into Tibet. This route offers a different experience, but it also requires specific permits and arrangements.
